Frequently asked questions about Smarter Drafter MCP.

Is this safe? Can AI access our confidential client data?

The MCP server connects to your Smarter Drafter account using secure authentication through OAuth 2.1, enabling per-user permissions so every action is scoped to exactly what that user is authorised to access.

Does this mean AI is writing our legal documents?

No – and this distinction is important. The AI collects information and identifies the right template, but the document itself is always generated by Smarter Drafter’s automation engine using your firm’s approved templates. The output is identical to what you’d get from completing the form manually in Smarter Drafter.

Which AI platforms does this work with?

We’re building against the open MCP standard, so it will work with any AI platform that supports MCP. Claude is what we’re using for our initial demonstrations, but if your team uses a different MCP-compatible platform, it should connect without issue.

What types of documents can be generated?

Any document that has been built as an automation in your Smarter Drafter account is available via MCP. During the private beta, we’ll be demonstrating with a curated set of forms. As the feature matures, all your existing automations will be accessible.

Do we need to do any technical setup?

You’ll access the MCP server URL from the Integrations page in Smarter Drafter and add it to your AI platform of choice. The complexity will be dependent on how your AI platform of choice allows for MCP servers to be added. Full setup instructions are available at developers.smarterdrafter.com/reference/mcp-server

What happens if the AI can't find the right form?

If no matching automation is found, Claude will tell the user clearly that no matching form exists in their Smarter Drafter account. If multiple similar forms are found, Claude will present the options and ask the user to confirm which one they’d like to use.

What forms will be available to search and generate?

The forms available to you are based on your own Smarter Drafter account – specifically, any forms you have access to that have been published. Draft automations won’t appear. If you expect a form to be available and can’t find it, check that it’s been published in Smarter Drafter first.

Can generated documents be auto-saved back to DMS or PMS?

Document management platforms like iManage are all introducing their own MCP servers, which means saving to your DMS becomes a capability of your AI platform – not Smarter Drafter. An AI assistant can connect to both your Smarter Drafter MCP and your DMS MCP as part of the same workflow, generating the document through Smarter Drafter and saving it to your document store in one seamless conversation. If there are gaps that may warrant Smarter Drafter to support this in the near future it will be considered.
